Supported Apps Wishlist

With the 2.0 codebase getting pretty stable, I am starting to turn my attention to expanding support for Growl for Windows to more applications. I created the initial set of plugins (iTunes, Outlook, Visual Studio) because they were applications i used frequently and they had fairly easy to implement plug-in architectures. But now I would really like to grow the list of applications that support GFW, so I am asking for your input.

Post the applications that you would most like to see support GFW in the comments below and I will focus on those apps. If the apps dont have a plugin architecture, I will try to work with the app developers to build support in natively. (Two Twitter clients, Witty and Spaz, have already had patches submitted to them to add support natively). The apps with the most votes will get priority.

Finally, if you are a developer of an app that supports GFW/GNTP or have created a plug-in for another app to add GFW/GNTP support, post up a link and I will add it to the list of supported applications.

**UPDATE 5**:Winamp Plug-in now available:

**UPDATE 4**:Thanks to @aegnor, there is now Pidgin support.

**UPDATE 3**:Thanks to Vaelek, there is now µTorrent support. check it out at:

**UPDATE 2**: The following plugins have been released - more to come soon:

**UPDATE**: As of right now (May 6th, 2009), here are the most requested apps:

Some of these are going to be tricky (ex: uTorrent and Digsby dont have API/plugin support, etc), but i am going to work hard on getting the apps supported one way or another. If anybody out there wants to volunteer to help (writing a plugin, pestering the app developers to add support, etc), that would be great. thanks for all of the feedback so far.

isn't Twhirl being superceded by Seesmic Desktop? if so and Twhirl is 'dying off', then i probably won't add support for it. if it is staying around as a separate app, then that is ok. does anybody know for sure?

since Firefox showed up a few times in the wishlist, i started with it. here is the first pass at a GFW Firefox extension:

http://www.growlforwindows.com/gfw/plugins/firefox

(Firefox might prompt you to allow the download since it is not coming from addons.mozilla.org yet)

i have tested it in Firefox 2 and 3, but i would appreciated everyone else trying it out and reporting any issues.

in this version, you can get notifications on these events:

Download Started
Download Completed
Download Failed
Download Cancelled

i havent added the ability to set a password yet, so if you are using the 'Require password for local applications' setting in GFW, you wont be able to receive any notifications yet.

anyway, if it looks good, i will make an official build and put it up on addons.mozilla.org for regular use. the method i used should make it pretty easy to create a Thunderbird plugin as well, so maybe i will work on that next. i also have a hardware/system monitor for things like battery life, disk space, event logs, etc that i started awhile back that i will probably try to wrap up and release.

Please add Songbird support for GrowlForWindows.

There are some addons from Songbird that does almost the same, with Snarl, but they don't work anymore, and the Gnarly bridge doesn't work (the addon register itself, with a really weird name, and then no notification passes through it)

brian dunnington said...

RE: Songbird

The Gnarly bridge emulates Snarl, so if the existing addons dont work with Snarl, they wont work with Gnarly either.

however, since Songbird is built on Mozilla, it should be easy to create an extension based on the Firefox and Thunderbird extensions. in fact, i spent about an hour this afternoon and whipped one up - i will post the link here as soon as it is available on the addons.mozilla.org site.

More Windows integration (software installed/uninstalled, Windows updates available/installed, computer shut down/restarted/logged in or out, low system memory, high CPU usage, Remote Desktop user signed on/off)
SmarterMail Server by SmarterTools integration (new mail, message sent/sending error)
RealVNC - all versions (alert of user signing on/off)
FreeSSHd and FreeFTPd (user signed on/off)
Apache HTTP Server integration (new person on site)

I know this is a lot but it would really make Growl better, especially the tighter Windows system integration.
